The Black Palace on Bokor: Ruins on the mountain road
By Kampot Guide · Published 12 October 2026 · Sources checked 10 October 2026
The Black Palace on Bokor, Damnak Sla Khmao, is a ruined royal retreat on the mountain road. Check access on arrival; an interior visit is not guaranteed.
What to expect at the ruins
The Black Palace is associated with Norodom Sihanouk. Expect the shell of a former retreat rather than a staffed museum or a furnished royal residence.
Access depends on conditions and any gates or restrictions in place that day. Neither an interior visit nor a walk around the full exterior is guaranteed. Do not rely on finding a ticket desk, visitor centre or café at the ruins.
Where it is on the mountain road
Damnak Sla Khmao is near the Lok Yeay Mao statue stop on the climb up Bokor, before the plateau. Name the palace stop separately when agreeing your route.
If your driver only hears Bokor, they may plan for the summit instead. Ask specifically for Damnak Sla Khmao or the Black Palace near Yeay Mao before leaving Kampot.
Visit safely and respect closed gates
Wear sturdy footwear and watch for uneven surfaces. Follow posted restrictions and local instructions. A closed gate is a boundary, not an invitation to find another entrance.
If access is closed, skip the ruins rather than improvising an entry. Keep the stop flexible within your mountain day.
Plan the rest of the mountain separately
Use the Bokor Mountain guide for the wider trip. The Bokor colonial church and Wat Sampov Pram are separate plateau stops, not part of the palace ruins.
Businesses for the mountain trip, not a walking detour
Thansur Bokor is a listed resort on the plateau, useful to consider if you want a mountain stay. Ask directly about current room availability and whether dining is available to day visitors; a resort listing does not promise walk-in access.
Bohemiaz Resort & Spa is a lower-area option listed west of town around National Road 3, with a restaurant. It is not on the summit or beside the statue, church or waterfall. Confirm the actual approach and any detour with your driver before considering a meal there.
These are transport-based options at different parts of a mountain outing, not two nearby doors or a guaranteed sequence. Check current access and service before departure. This editorial shortlist is not a paid-placement ranking.
