Popokvil Waterfall on Bokor: when to go and what to expect

By Kampot Guide · Published 12 October 2026 · Sources checked 10 October 2026

Popokvil is the named waterfall on the Bokor plateau. In the wet season it is more likely to be worth the detour. After a dry spell it can be a trickle.

Where Popokvil Waterfall is

Popokvil Waterfall is mapped north of the old hill station on the Bokor plateau. It is a mountain outing, not an old-town attraction or a short walk from the riverside. Check the entrance route and current access before adding it to your day.

Does it flow in October?

Flow depends on recent rain. October can bring wet-season flow, but the month alone does not guarantee a full waterfall. After a dry stretch, expect less water or a trickle.

More water does not mean safer access. Heavy rain can make paths hazardous and water levels unpredictable. Check local conditions and skip the stop if weather or access advice is against it.

Safety and what to bring

Wear footwear with grip, bring drinking water and rain protection, and stay on permitted paths. Wet rocks and muddy approaches can be slippery; keep back from unprotected drops and fast water.

This guide does not confirm safe swimming areas, lifeguard provision or current water conditions. Do not swim or enter the water based on a photo or low apparent flow. Respect barriers and closures, and turn back rather than improvising a route over slick rocks.

Fitting it into a Bokor day

Use the Bokor Mountain guide for the wider trip. The colonial church, Wat Sampov Pram and the waterfall are separate stops, not one walk-through attraction.

Agree the waterfall detour, vehicle suitability, waiting time and return journey with your driver or tour operator before departure. Starting in town does not rule it out, but being on the Bokor road does not guarantee it fits. No current entrance fee or opening schedule is confirmed here.

What people mean by the Bokor waterfall

For this guide, Bokor waterfall means Popokvil on the plateau. Confirm the actual pin rather than assuming every waterfall advertised near Kampot is the same site.

If you have already spent the morning at the Lok Yeay Mao statue and Black Palace, reassess the time and weather before continuing. The Thansur Bokor resort is another separate destination. Skip a stop rather than rushing a slippery approach or the journey back.

Businesses for the mountain trip, not a walking detour

Thansur Bokor is a listed resort on the plateau, useful to consider if you want a mountain stay. Ask directly about current room availability and whether dining is available to day visitors; a resort listing does not promise walk-in access.

Bohemiaz Resort & Spa is a lower-area option listed west of town around National Road 3, with a restaurant. It is not on the summit or beside the statue, church or waterfall. Confirm the actual approach and any detour with your driver before considering a meal there.

These are transport-based options at different parts of a mountain outing, not two nearby doors or a guaranteed sequence. Check current access and service before departure. This editorial shortlist is not a paid-placement ranking.
